An interesting counter-factual that comes to mind - if the Norse Greenlanders had brought smallpox or other diseases with them, then Native Americans would have had 500 years to recover (and keep immunity?) - The conquistadors would have faced millions of not-dying-natives. A much different world would have resulted.

I doubt you can assume that such diseases would spread and persist in the Native American dispersed population. European immivasion created adjacent disease reservoirs of urban and concentrated agriculturalists.

Also, Europeans colonized other regions where they did not have as great a disease or technological advantage.

I highly recommend you read (or listen, the audiobook was great) to Conquistador by Buddy Levy. It might change your mind on this point. It tells the story of Cortez from the day they arrive on the shores of Mexico to when they take over the Aztec empire, where there were still many, many native peoples. The European advantages were many more than just disease… for better and worse.

Self defense EDC tip | screwdriver shiv

Self defense EDC tip:

Carry a plausibly-deniable shiv.

It's useful to have an option that minimizes your legal jeopardy when used. A screwdriver goes places other weapons can't.

I prefer a short Philips-head screwdriver with a fat grip.

https://www.quora.com/How-do-you-become-good-at-knife-fighting

Years ago, I was talking to a knife fighting devotee and he said he prefers to use high carbon steel blades that have been left in salty water overnight, after being sharpened, as the micro corrosion made the wounds instantly painful, much harder to close or heal.

See James Lafond for details.

my bagwork | video caption

First a slow clean demonstration of basic open hand strikes with lead and rear hand.

Then flowed until I noticed my left rear low kick was weak in these clunky sneakers. So I practiced variations on it.

Vibrams feel more natural, but the lack of padding can lead to chronic injury on concrete.

Lastly I practiced my lead left hook. The last strike lightly sprained my hand by bending back the fingers, so I stopped. That lead hook to the head is injury-prone and requires careful practice. The clothesline hits much harder, but can also sprain the wrist in a similar manner, so use it only when certain of landing correctly.

The jab blinds. The straight and overhand are medium power and risk.

Use risky strikes to create rhythm for injury-immune power strikes such as elbows, knees and shins*. The main danger with those strikes is overcommitment, so they require setup and ideally exploit enemy momentum to maximize impact.

*Muay thai torques low kicks to avoid shin breakage. I probably don't do it correctly, but then I don't accumulate chronic shinbone damage either.

Apparently…

Ok, here's the Girls under-12 fighter of the year doing a kickboxing-glove workout on a bag that's the closest I could find to mine. I'm still not sure it's suitable, so maybe the reason she doesn't do anything like my bagwork is the bag's fault.

Ok, no, she's just unfamiliar with the bag. At minute 3:00 she starts finding the rhythm. Cool.

Anyway she's doing kickboxing rules, whereas I do streetfighting with no padded gloves and normal street shoes.

Almost nobody has the correct bag and is using it properly to train reflex and momentum striking! This girl was just brought in to do an advertisement. She'd never used such a thing before. One can tell by the way she was puzzled at first and tried bobbing her head in mimicry.

Protip: A generic bag of frozen stir-fry veggies is a dollar. They cook fast, keep much longer than fresh produce, and can easily be mixed into whatever your poverty food of choice is (whether that’s ramen, potatoes, eggs, beans, rice, whatever). Adds some taste and color to your food, as well as much-needed nutrition.
Also, dried bouillon cubes are cheaper and easier to store than chicken or vegetable broth, and usually stay good much longer. You can go for the low-sodium version if you need to reduce the salt in your diet, too.
Bread, tortillas, and shredded cheese can also be frozen to help them keep longer.

I just found a "squeezie bottle" of condensed broth, like a paste almost. Fairly low sodium and nothing preserving it besides the food.
It's really meaty and roasty and I can dilute it however I want.
It's like four dollars instead of two for a carton of middle brand broth, but I've been drawing off of it for a month.

I got into social dancing and at swing and ballroom classes it was always the same story where all the females never had anyone to dance with because it was only 25%ish men folk. I'm assertive and would ask the few men to dance who were semi decent but I always thought if men knew about this they would be crazy not to learn and meet women this way. I really appreciate a man who knows how to dance and if I were a man I would also be making an effort to learn to cook and master a few dishes. Every single female I know loves it when men can cook and dance well lol

As someone dating in their 20s, it is getting hard to find people who aren’t having SSRI-related dysfunction. Recently met an older (early 30s guy) and it was seriously cool having a sexual experience that didn’t end with “don’t bother I’m just not going to finish no matter how long we go.” They really seem to be handing out these serious, almost-impossible-to-withdraw medications like candy on Halloween.

They don’t actually solve the problem long term, you can’t really come off them ever (I know a lot of people who have tried; only one who succeeded and they were on an exceedingly low dose to begin with - it took six months before the frightening neurological symptoms subsided), and they permanently damage ability to have human connection (I don’t understand how that doesn’t worsen depression and anxiety long term).

I get that I’m the asshole for suggesting that people take a second look at the side effect profile and consider whether these might be overprescribed. I get that they do make life better overall for some people. I’ve also seen my friends become psychotic and ruin their lives when they try to get off them (because the sexual side effects and weight gain were unbearable). So IDK, it feels urgent enough to raise as a concern. Especially when so many people are taking them.

I see a lot of people given SSRIs for anxiety that could probably be better treated by e.g. not smoking so much weed. It is hard to manage the underlying factors that drive people to alcohol and drug use, but I think probably easier than being rendered impotent by SSRIs.

I get that seemingly everyone is depressed these days, but I really question giving SSRIs, which have poor efficacy and devastating side effects, before demanding lifestyle change. Walking 10k steps and CBT are useful interventions that can be easily monitored by physicians with modern technology.

I guess good for half the 20-something cohort for not being able to orgasm really ever, but it’s not great for building the physical aspect of human connection, which I maintain is important. IDK what society looks like when half the prime age population isn’t able to have a fulfilling or enjoyable sex life.

Thank Lucifer.

This Zappos article is like the whole catalog of rich people problems in a nutshell: drugs, parasitic relationships, arrests, and dumb accidents.
I know some people who know people who made a lot of money in the 2000s dot com boom. One of them got a "guru" who he paid several thousands of dollars a day to. The "guru" fed him Ayahuasca and people who visited the rich guy at his house said he had removed all furniture from his house, was wearing robes and said he could control the winds with his thoughts.
They often say that there's no one more hopeless than a rich junky. If they have a very large amount of money, they never hit rock bottom until they're dead.

If you get fired as a cop, you can’t get hired as a cop again. Well you can, but that department better be starving for anyone with a pulse and without a pulse before they hire you.
That’s how a lot of these bad cops who end up killing innocent people or abuse their power stay in their position of power until they get caught by the community. They keep quitting when they are being investigated by their department, since they quit, the department stops the investigation and it will look like they did an ok or good job at their previous department.

Depends on the level you are on.
My boss recently just got made “quit his job”, and he is the Finance Director.
I am sure “got fired” would not look good for his CV, he had considered to move to Scotland anyway as his relatives are there, now he just use that as the reason to quit.
When you hit certain level, “got fired” will look really bad for you and you really would be better off quitting.
For the lowest level floor worker though? Yeah get fired and claim benefit.

How Not To Break Your Shin by Bas Rutten
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhTB1slmYU0

https://www.anatomystandard.com/Lower_Limb/Leg/Tibia.html

The tibia or shinbone is the strongest bone in the human body. It may withstand the vertical load of more than 1000 kg*.

On an upright skeleton, the tibia's depth is greatest, obviously. Second is its length, because most shear force will be front-back, as one runs. Least is width, because left-right shear is not intended. The very thought of it frightens.

So obviously, do not kick with the side of the shin. Pivot hips to strike with the knife-edge, even though it hurts your surface tissue more. In this case, safety lies in pain!

I probably need to fix my form there.
